Homes shot up in Opelousas neighborhood, police say social media disputes may be to blame

OPELOUSAS, La. -- Opelousas Police are currently investigating (2) shootings that occurred overnight and early this morning.

The first shooting occurred on last night just before 10:00 P.M. in the 900 Blk. of Garland Ave. Officers responding found that one adult female victim had been struck by gunfire while she was lying in bed inside her residence.  It was determined that multiple rounds were fired at the home. The victim was transported to a local hospital with a serious injury.

The second shooting occurred this morning at about 5:30 A.M. in the 200 Blk of Westwego St. A large number of rounds were fired that struck multiple homes, one being struck at least (19) times. Thankfully no one was injured as a result of this shooting.

Investigators have developed leads that point to the recent shootings over the past 24 Hours being related to some degree. Investigators have been monitoring social media and have noticed groups are engaging in inflammatory exchanges that suggest the shootings maybe retaliatory in nature. Investigators have developed several persons of interest and will be looking to question all parties who are suspected in being involved in these events. The department has received great support from the community and implores the community to provide any information they have about these senseless acts of gun violence.
