ST. JOHN THE BAPTIST PARISH, La. (KADN) — Louisiana State Police said a Lafayette truck driver has been charged with negligent homicide and other offenses months after a crash during a "super fog" on I-55 in October.

Troopers said Ronald Britt, 61, was booked into the St. John the Baptist Parish Correction Center on charges of negligent homicide, negligent injuring, reckless operation, and other traffic violations. He could face up to five years in prison if convicted of negligent homicide.

RELATED STORY:

The crash happened on I-55 near Reserve on Oct. 23, 2023. According to LSP, an extensive investigation showed Britt was driving a 2022 Freightliner in the left lane of I-55 North and rear-ended a 2018 Cadillac CTS that was stopped behind several vehicles involved in minor crashes.

Investigators said the driver of the Cadillac, James Fleming, 60, died in the crash and his 70-year-old wife was seriously injured.

According to troopers, Britt was driving at a speed that was not safe for the limited visibility created by the fog.

A total of eight people died and 63 others were injured in the pileup.
