Mamou, La. (KADN) A 5 year old boy was viciously attacked by a pit bull in the outskirts of Mamou. The dog was owned by Jacob Pourche, and days before the incident he was arrested by police.

The next day, his mother and father, Floyd and Peggy Pourche had the pit bull at their home. In the morning their great grandson, Brently, visited them and after only being there for one night the dog attacked him.

"They were in a room And the dog was outside and the dog got on the porch. Well the kid slipped out of the house and the dog got him,” said Peggy Pourche.

Peggy and Floyd say they called authorities as soon as this happened, but police weren’t on scene in time. Once time went on and the two saw their grandson in pain, they wanted to take matters into their own hands.

"I wanted to kill the dog, we wanted to kill the dog. We were scared that if we would shoot the dog we would end up going to jail for cruelty to animals,” said Peggy.

Although Mamou has an ordinance that bans pit bull, Evangeline Parish Sheriff Charles Guillory tells News 15 this is out of the city limits. Guillory says he expects an arrest in the case, and blames pet owners more than specific breeds for vicious attacks like this.  .

If they're trying to make a pet to be a mean dog I'm against that 100%.  It seems like that's done more so with a pit bull breed than other dogs,” said Sheriff Guillory.
