Melville priest attacked, suspect facing hate crime charge

MELVILLE, La. -- Father Stephen Ugwu is in stable condition following an attack at the Saint John the Evangelist Catholic Church in Melville. Ugwu is the church's pastor. According to the Diocese of Lafayette spokesperson, Blue Rolfes, the attack took place yesterday afternoon.

The Diocese of Lafayette released the following statement Friday morning: "The Diocese of Lafayette confirms that Father Stephen Ugwu, pastor of Saint John the Evangelist Catholic Church in Melville, was violently attacked yesterday afternoon on the church campus. Father Ugwu was transported to an area hospital and is in stable condition.  The Melville Police Department is handling the investigation. We wish to thank all who have been praying for Father Ugwu and request that you continue to do so."

Melville Police have arrested Johnny Wayne Neely, 49, from Palmetto in connection with the attack. He is charged with attempted 2nd degree murder, hate crimes, home invasion and a bench warrant. 

The investigation into the incident is ongoing.Â
