CHURCH POINT, La. (KADN) — A deadly ultralight plane crash happened just outside of Church Point on Tuesday. The Acadia Parish Coroner's Office identified the victim as Nick Van Houten, 47, of Sunset.
News 15 spoke with an aviation consultant, who has over four decades of flight experience, about how ultralight planes are not subject to the same regulations as other planes.
“They don't have to be registered,” said Robert Katz. “They don't have to be flown by a certificated pilot. These things are considered, they're more toys than aircraft, but they can crash and kill just like any aircraft, so it's not something that, you know, attracts my interest as a pilot. I wouldn't want to be flying something like that but a lot of people do.”
It's not yet known what led up to the crash. The FAA is investigating.
