LAFAYETTE, La. (NEWS 15) — The National Weather Service reported a Cold Weather Advisory is in effect for Acadiana from midnight until Tuesday, January 7, at 9 a.m.
Forecasters said very cold wind chills as low as 20 degrees are expected.
They added frostbite and hypothermia will occur if unprotected skin is exposed to these temperatures.
Weather experts advised to use caution while walking outside: wear appropriate clothing, a hat, and gloves.
They also suggested keeping pets indoors as much as possible.
They added make sure outdoor animals have a warm, dry shelter, food, and unfrozen water.
NWS urged making frequent checks on older family, friends, and neighbors.
They added ensure portable heaters are used correctly.
They emphasized not using generators or grills as heat sources.
