Warming shelters open in parts of Acadiana due to freezing temperatures

LAFAYETTE, La. — In response to freezing temperatures across Acadiana, officials have opened warming shelters to provide refuge for individuals experiencing homelessness or who lack adequate heat.

LAFAYETTE PARISH:

  • Dupuis Recreation Center (1234 E. Pont Des Mouton Road in Lafayette) beginning Sunday, January 5, at 6 p.m.
  • The warming centers will remain open until Friday when temperatures are expected to rise above the freezing mark.

ST. LANDRY PARISH:

  • Former Indian Hills Country Club (1141 E. Prudhomme Street in Opelousas) beginning Monday, January 6, at 6 p.m.
  • It will also be open on Tuesday night.
  • It will be open from 6 p.m. until 8 a.m. on both days.
  • Meals will NOT be provided.
  • People encouraged to bring their own food, blankets, pillows, and any other materials necessary while staying at the shelter.
  • Space will be limited.
  • Weather conditions will be re-evaluated for Wednesday night.
