Lafayette native killed in New Year's Eve attack on Bourbon Street in New Orleans, sources say

NEW ORLEANS (NEWS 15) — News 15 has learned that one of the people killed in the French Quarter early on New Year's Day when a driver rammed a pickup truck into a crowd before being shot to death by police is from Lafayette.

Sources said Tiger Bech, 27, a former football player at St. Thomas More Catholic High School, died from the crash. He was a Princeton graduate and worked on Wall Street, according to the sources. They added he was in town for the holidays.

He was also older brother of current TCU wide receiver Jack Bech, who also attended STM.

A prayer service is scheduled to be held at STM at 5 p.m.

Many others were injured as Wednesday's attack turned festive Bourbon Street into macabre mayhem. The FBI is investigating it as an act of terrorism. Authorities are looking into whether other people may have been involved. The driver was identified as 42-year-old Shamsud-Din Bahar Jabbar. That is according to six law enforcement officials who spoke to The Associated Press. The officials were not authorized to discuss details of the investigation publicly and spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity.

Authorities said 15 people were killed as Wednesday's attack turned festive Bourbon Street into macabre mayhem. The FBI is investigating it as an act of terrorism. An Islamic State group flag was found in the vehicle.

The FBI identified the driver as Shamsud-Din Jabbar, 42, a U.S. citizen from Texas and said it is working to determine Jabbar's potential associations and affiliations with terrorist organizations. Authorities are also looking into whether other people may have been involved.
