Slow start to hurricane season

Louisiana (KADN)- It's been a pretty quiet start to the hurricane season, and many Louisianans are most likely happy. However, the peak of hurricane season has just begun. Whether we should stay on our toes remains to be questioned.

"This whole year has been a fluke because we were expecting it to be a very active hurricane season."

The last time we didn't see a hurricane's name in the month of august was in 1997.

Kyleigh Wright doesn't want a possible storm to show up, but her family is keeping their guard up just in case. "I'm actually really happy about it because I like a lot of people that damaged and stuff, and it's hard for a lot of families, so we always have my gas with the radiator to definitely always have water ready and prepared and canned food."

Glenn Smith remembers just how bad Hurricane Katrina was and hopes one is not soon as a parent. "I think it would be at the wrong time school just started, but you can't ever be too sure."

What may be the reason for such a lag in this year's hurricane season? Dry air and wind shear in the Atlantic.

"Saharan Dust is really just kicking on up, and that's sucking all the moisture out of the atmosphere. So these tropical waves normally really blossom in the Atlantic. They've been really struggling lately and it looks like that trend is going to continue," says Stormtrack15 Meteorologist Adam Oliver.

This is great news for Louisianians but don't take your foot off the gas just yet as we are at the peak of the season.

" Our hurricane season lasts at least through the middle part of October. We start to see things kind of fading away as we get to the end of October or early November, but that's still a long way away," says Oliver.

We have another two months of tracking the tropics before we can say good riddance to the 2022 hurricane season. Remember always to stay prepared ahead of time.
