A shelter-in-place has been lifted following a chlorine leak from a southwest Louisiana chemical plant Wednesday.
Around 9:45 a.m., there were reports of a possible chemical leak at the Biolab plant in Westlake, near Lake Charles.
A visible vapor cloud could be seen in the area and air monitors confirmed chlorine was in the air, according to state police.
Phillips 66, which is just across the interstate from Biolab, said it ordered the evacuation of contractors and non-essential personnel. They said they received several reports of eye and nose irritation along with a chlorine smell.
Officials issued a shelter-in-place and closed Interstate 10 near the plant, diverting traffic off the major roadway.
Emergency technicians said the leak came from a chlorine transport line going into the plant, which they eventually shut down.
The shelter-in-place has since been lifted and interstate reopened.
Officials continue to conduct air monitoring in the area.
