New Iberia, La (KADN)- Many residents impacted by the tornado, they're still hoping to find a new place to stay as they wait for their homes to hopefully be rebuilt.
"This one really caused a lot of devastation."
Councilwoman Deidre LedBetter is still shocked as the tornado wiped out a majority of her district leaving families without a home. "We haven't had anything like this in the city for years. it took out six or seven trailers in that area. then it hit the apartment complex, then it went across to the hospital over there."
New Iberia's Southport subdivision and the Iberia Medical Center were severely damaged.
Parish President M. Larry Richard says recovery efforts are already in the works. "The hospital itself really wasn't damaged, it's the doctor's office building that is attached. I would think that you are probably talking depending on materials. how long it's going to take to get certain things in."
It may not be the same for those in the Southport area, though Richard is working hard to find storm victims a new place to call home. "That's going to take a little bit longer when you are talking about rebuilding an apartment. that's not going to be done in a year's time, but what I'm talking about is getting people back where they can have a place to live."
Councilwoman LedBetter understands it will take time.
With the help of the governor, the city has passed an ordinance to provide trailers for families impacted by the storm.
"the city is going to work with the residents that have been displaced in order to get them housing on site. they can have the trailers for up to a year and under certain circumstances, they can get that extended," says Councilwoman LedBetter.
If you are still in need of any help picking up debris you can call city hall for assistance.
