Covering Your Health: First OTC birth control pill now being sold online

(KADN) — The first over-the-counter birth control pill, called Opill, is now available at pharmacies. It is now being sold online and will soon be in local stores.

But is Opill as effective as a prescription?

The medication in Opill was first approved in the US 50 years ago, but only available by prescription. It is worth noting that it's been available over the counter for years in many other countries.

Opill is considered one of the safer forms of birth control pill. It only contains one hormone progestin while most popular birth control pills contain two hormones progestin plus estrogen. A progestin-only pill avoids the estrogen-associated risk and side effects.

The move to an over-the-counter option has been endorsed by several physician organizations and approved by the FDA. But there are a few things you need to know about this medication.

To be effective, it needs to be taken around the same time every day, and it shouldn't be taken by women with certain underlying medical problems.

If there are any questions, you should review them with your primary care provider.

Right now, the price is $50 for a three-month supply, which is cheaper than the cash price for prescription medication and in line with most copays.

Experts predict other birth control pills will soon be available without a prescription. The company estimates this current change will improve access to an estimated three million women in the US.
