Lafayette, La (KADN) -- The suspect in one of last week's deadly shootings at a Lafayette motel has died of a self-inflicted gunshot, police say. It happened during a standoff Tuesday morning.

Investigators say Clifton Washington, 34, was identified as the suspect in the shooting death of Nancy Herrick, 39, of St. Martinville. Herrick was shot and killed at the Plantation Motor Inn on Friday November 24.

Tuesday morning, Lafayette Police learned Washington was at the Super 7 motel in Lafayette, just two miles away from the initial crime scene. When officers tried to arrest Washington, police say he barricaded himself inside a room. A SWAT team was called in, which is when officers say Washington shot and killed himself.

Police say Herrick's murder at the Plantation Motor Inn was domestic in nature. It was the second deadly shooting at the motel last week. On Wednesday November 22, a man was shot and killed after meeting up with another man at the motel to buy/sell music equipment. The two shootings are unrelated, police say.
