ST. MARTIN PARISH, La. (NEWS 15) — Settlement money that St. Martin Parish received from the national opioid lawsuit against the pharmaceutical industry will be put to good use.

The sheriff's office is launching a first-of-its-kind program aimed at identifying and helping those who suffer from opioid and other forms of drug addiction. The goal is to help those who need substance abuse and mental health treatment get it and keep them out of jail.

"And it's called a STAR program - Substance Abuse Team for Addiction and Recovery,” said Sheriff Beckett Breaux. “So, that's going to be the name of it, and look, my whole goal is, and honestly, it's every sheriff's office goal, is not to have anybody in jail. If you look at the statistics, and y’all know that already, look at the statistics, drugs, drug involvement, one way or another, it's 90% of the crime that we have."

Sheriff Breaux believes this intervention effort will get drug users the help they need to recover while also lowering crime in the community.
