Acadiana High lockdown due to student  bringing a gun on campus

On March 28, 2023, at approximately 0853 hours, Acadiana High School was placed on lockdown after receiving a tip of a potential hand gun on campus. Acadiana High School was on lock down for approximately 1 hour. With the use of school cameras and assistance from the school administration, 18-year-old Jakari Pete, an Acadiana High student was identified as the

potential student in question. It was quickly determined that Mr. Pete had left the school in his vehicle at which time with the assistance of the Lafayette Parish Sheriff Department, the vehicle was located and a traffic stop was conducted. Scott Police Officers then proceeded to detain Mr. Pete as well as a 17-year-old juvenile passenger. Both subjects were transported to the

Scott Police Department and a search warrant was applied for Mr. Pete’s vehicle. During the search, a rifle was located in the vehicle and Mr. Pete admitted during questioning that the firearm was his. No other fire arms or weapons were located in the vehicle during the search.

At no time did Mr. Pete display, carry or walk anywhere on Acadiana High School Campus with any firearm. Also located during the search was 7.95 grams of marijuana as well as drug paraphernalia.

After questioning, the juvenile was released to his parents without incident and or any charges.

Mr. Pete was booked into the Lafayette Parish Correctional Center for the below listed charges:

ï‚· Illegal Carrying of weapons on school property

ï‚· Possession of Marijuana

ï‚· Possession of Drug Paraphernalia

ï‚· Contributing to the Delinquency of a Juvenile.

Earlier today, Acadiana High School’s administration received a report that a student had a gun on campus. The school immediately went into lockdown status and school administration, along with law enforcement, began an investigation.

During the investigation it was discovered that the student believed to have a gun was no longer on campus. The school remained on lockdown status until it was confirmed that there was not an imminent threat to campus. The school then moved to shelter in place status while the student was located and arrested offsite.

The student has been charged with illegal carrying of weapons on school property, booked into the Lafayette Parish Correctional Facility, and faces expulsion from school.

LPSS would like to thank its administrative staff and law enforcement for quickly responding to this incident. We are committed to keeping Lafayette Parish Schools safe learning environments for our students.
