OPELOUSAS, La. (KADN) — Opelousas Mayor Julius Alsandor had a message to the city after the police chief's arrest in a love-triangle shooting that's resulted in the Opelousas police chief facing charges. Mayor Alsandor is standing by the embattled police chief … at least for now.

"I have met with Chief Leblanc since the news broke of his chargers against him," said Mayor Alsandor. "He indicated that we he will continue to serve Opelousas in the elected office of the chief of police for the city of Opelousas."

Chief LeBlanc has admitted to having an affair on his wife, Crystal LeBlanc, with Savannah Butler, another officer with the Opelousas Police Department.

The affair erupted in gun violence just before Christmas, wounding Chief LeBlanc and his wife.

Butler turned herself in and is facing multiple charges for allegedly shooting Chief LeBlanc through the hand and Crystal LeBlanc in the arm with a single shot.

"Senior members of our police department are currently conducting an appropriate investigation regarding her involvement in the incidents and event and it remains pending," explained Mayor Alsandor.

He also said despite Chief LeBlanc being arrested on multiple charges, he supports the elected chief of police, and as mayor, his hands are tied anyway.

"And the city council, not myself as the mayor, can remove him from office," added the mayor.

Mayor Alsandor also said the only way LeBlanc could lose his job as chief is if he's convicted of the charges against him, which include obstruction and malfeasance.
