RAYNE, La. (KADN) — Rayne police are looking for the driver who damaged public basketball courts by doing donuts on them on the Fourth of July. The courts are now closed while repairs are underway.
Someone drove a vehicle through the basketball court near the MLK Center in Rayne, damaging the grounds and prompting city officials to close the courts through the weekend.
Since the incident, city officials have been putting their hands and feet to the ground repairing the courts. City officials said the vehicle was joyriding in circles on the grounds. Luckily, the repairs to the court will not be expensive.
"That's correct; it looks like the report I got, a lot of the material went back together and we hoping that it's gonna stay together,” said Mayor Chuck Robicheaux. “We'll re-anchor it, of course, and the tire marks are out there on the court, but they are trying to clean that up."
The $80,000 project with four basketball goals and two courts was placed in Rayne three years ago. City officials said the idea to revamp the courts was for the kids in Rayne.
"A really nice facility for the kids because everyone says there's nowhere or nothing for kids to do. We spend all that money and someone goes and just makes a mess of things," added Mayor Robicheaux.
Police said trouble is waiting for the culprits.
"We are going to find out who did this and we are going to file charges. It's vandalism, it's destruction of private and public property, and we feel that whoever it is has to be punished for it. We are going to file charges on them," explained Mayor Robicheaux.
The mayor also said the basketball courts will remain closed until the investigation is done and the repairs are finished.
