An Opelousas man, who was being taken to a mental health facility, is accused of stealing the school bus, driving recklessly down Pinhook Road, and crashing into four vehicles. But his time on the run didn't end there.
Police said a man stole a school bus, caused a crash, and then, stole a Good Samaritan's pickup truck. The suspect is behind bars.

LAFAYETTE, La. — Lafayette Police Department officers responded to a serious vehicle crash on the 1900 block of West Pinhook Road on Sunday, December 15, around 6:30 p.m. The incident involved a stolen bus that had been taken earlier by a suspect being transported to a mental health facility. The suspect, later identified as Marion Baker, 26, of Opelousas, elected not to enter the facility and instead stole an unoccupied school bus.
Police explained the Opelousas man stole the school bus while being transferred without handcuffs to a mental health facility in Youngsville. The bus was driven to West Pinhook Road and Kaliste Saloom Road where it was involved in a four-vehicle crash.
"Then, he busted this car up and he got out the bus with just a muscle shirt on," said a witness.
"The transport van got to the facility,” said Cpl. Ashley Wood with the Lafayette Police Department. “They had called the facility ahead of time to let them know he is a flight risk. So, staff members did meet him outside but he got out of the van and got out on foot."
Police accuse Marion Baker, 26, of Opelousas, of stealing a pickup truck from a person who was assisting people at the site of the bus crash. Baker allegedly stopped at a gas station in the Hub City where he stole a few items before driving to Rayne where the Rayne Police Department arrested him.
"So, yeah, they took custody of him. They apprehended him and, at that point, we came over to get him from them, and bring him to UHC,” added Cpl. Wood.
Baker is now being held at the Lafayette Parish Correctional Center without bail on charges of hit and run (2 counts), theft of a motor vehicle (2 counts), theft, reckless operation of a vehicle, failure to obey traffic control signal, improper use of two-way left turn lane, and operating vehicle with suspended/revoked license.
