LAFAYETTE, LA- Drivers everywhere have been seeing the record uptick in gas prices. Ride share drivers have been feeling the pain at the pump a little differently than most drivers. What was once a quick way to make extra cash, has turned into a way to quickly lose dollars. Louisiana's average price for a gallon of gas according to AAA is $4.15. A local ride share driver is questioning getting out of the business due to the increase in gas prices.
“I’ve worked part time for Uber and Lyft,” says Foster Snipes.
It is becoming increasingly difficult for rideshare drivers like Foster Snipes to continue working for ride share companies.
“When we get a call and we have to go way across town for a $3 ride, you know dropping someone around the corner. You know it’s just not worth it right now,” says Snipes.
Ride share companies like Lyft and uber may see a decrease in drivers if the price of gas continues to climb.
“Usually, I am able to do 4 rides and get a profit,” says Snipes.
Since the pump jump Snipes says, “Now I have to do 6-7 rides to get a profit.”
Which is a 75% increase.
Starting Wednesday Uber will be adding a surcharge to ride pickups.
As gas prices continue to go up, Lyft drivers may be ditching filling up to drive for the company if a similar charge is not put in place.
“Lyft definitely should raise the price just a little. Where it’s still practical, but you’re looking out for your drivers because $3 a ride it doesn’t cut it. That’s not even a full tank of gas anymore,” says Snipes.
Uber representatives say the surcharge will stay in effect for at least 60 days. Lyft has not commented or announced that they will be adding a surcharge to services.
